The Ide is a member of the Cyprinidae family.
It is common in Europe and Siberia up to the Kolyma.
It prefers deep rivers with moderate currents, lakes with flowing water and water bodies on floodplains.
Ide enjoy shoaling in deep silted holes, under piers and berms.
It is a freshwater fish, but it can survive in brackish water of sea bays as well.
The ide is highly sensitive to the level of water oxygenation, therefore it doesn't occur in shallow lakes and in closed ponds.
It is practically omnivorous.
Its diet includes plants, insects, crustaceans and small fish.
Adult ide's length ranges from 30 to 50 cm, its weight is about 3 kg.
Large specimens reach a weight of about 7 to 8 kg.
Visually ide is similar to chub or roach.
It differs from roach with its smaller scales and greenish yellow iris.
It is distinguished from chub by its higher body, lighter back and small scales.
In spring ide's body obtains metallic luster.
Its dorsal and caudal fins are black, the rest are red. Adult ide's scaling has a gold shimmer.
